John was like an elder brother to me.

I came to know him as a small boy in the 50's while living at Runyenje's with my father who worked at the Chief's office as a clerk. His father Julius Kamau was a dedicated Church elder and his mother a very supportive housewife. I vividly rememer his father's lean frame and grey hair
which he inherited as well as his mother, his two twin sisters who the father was said not to have known who was who, his sister Mary and brother Njagi (Ndovori) who was my good friend while we were in secondary school. I did not get to know his other siblings closely.

He was a close friend of my late brother Hon Mbarari Karingi who was with him at Mbiruri School and EA University, Dar es Salaam . As a fellow member at the Prestigious Nairobi Safari Club at Lilian Towers in the 80's, I was able to cultivate a close relationship with John as we swam at the pool together and exchanged long held memories in the changinng rooms.

He did some legal work for me both at Nairobi and Runyenje's very successfully. He was a highly committed lawyer who served with unusual dedication.

I will forever remember his amiable character and ready laugh which made him an outstanding character wherever he went.

May the almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace. Fare thee well my dear brother.
I, my wife and family offer our most sincere condolences to Josphine and the family.

I got to know John when we served in the Board of Governors of Mbiruri High School, Embu. He was our Chairman.

I loved working with John. He was always warm and clear minded. And he embraced and upheld integrity in doing school business with unusual emphasis and consistency. That helped a lot as we supported the school.

John was also keen to empower the people of Embu with legal education and helped to do so over the Royal Media Services Wimwaro Radio station which broadcasts in Kiembu for a long time. And it was nice hearing John articulate legal concepts in Kiembu. It helped many local people.

I also had many light moments chatting about our professional practice ( l am a licensed land surveyor) offices at Runyenjes. Until he set up there, John thought everyone could be trusted (tells us his kind of person). But he gradually learnt that honesty as a virtue wasn't in abundant supply at the time and gradually put the necessary "firewalls" to surround his office. John went on to serve local, simple people at rural level with unwavering commitment. John was as professional as they could come. I will miss him and our chats. I know his clients will miss him a lot more.

Legal professionals from Runyenjes should feel challenged by this polished and rather urban professional who humbled himself to go serve at rural level, associated limitations notwithstanding, and go fill up the professional void that he leaves behind.

On behalf of my family and of Embu County Professionals, l condole with John's family at this time of mourning. May God grant them comfort and strength to bear, and help them to continue growing Jonh's fine legacy. May God rest John's soul in eternal peace.

Dear Sheila and the Kamunyori Family.

Poleni sana. Reading through Dad's life history it is clear he lived life to the fullest, treasured the family (and community) and leaves both much better than he found it.

May he rest in peace.

Poleni and be comforted.

Here is a poem by Li Young Lee I would like to share with you...

I buried my father
in the sky.
Since then, the birds
clean and comb him every morning
and pull the blanket up to his chin
every night...
